The Layers of a Traditional Hearth Pad
On the surface, a Traditional Hearth Pad is a beautiful display of textured stone or tile. It isn’t a single material and instead a system of layers, each with a specific job. Here’s a breakdown of all the components that reinforce true protection in your Hearth Pad:
Tile or stone
Tile or stone makes up the surface and where your hearth pad gets its character, color, and unique finish. Our Traditional Hearth Pads are available in a variety of non-combustible materials, including ceramic, porcelain, slate, and natural stone. The surface is then bonded to the substrate beneath.
Substrate
Using thinset, a modified mortar, the tiles are bonded to the substrate, creating a secure pad that will withstand weight and heat. The substrate is where the pad’s thermal protection lives, preventing heat from transferring to the floor below. All our Traditional Hearth Pads have very high R-values, typically 2.3 or 1.592. Classic American Hearth’s construction process doesn’t rely on air pockets for thermal value. That matters because air pockets compress over time. The substrate doesn’t.
Frame
The frame follows the perimeter of the Hearth Pad and helps increase R-value. The 1″ frame uses a single half-inch non-combustible substrate and delivers an R-value of 2.30. The 1-¼” frame uses two substrates for strength in large boards and to achieve a ¾” substrate for the frame, providing an R-value of 1.592. Every Classic American Hearth frame is made from extruded tubular aluminum and fitted with corner plugs to keep the pad perfectly shaped. Along with R-value contribution, frames also come in a variety of styles for further design customization.
Accessories
You can add additional accessories to your Hearth Pad, including pedestals and wall pads. The add-ons extend the system further, adding thermal coverage beneath the pad and protection behind it for stoves near walls.

Stoves that produce significant heat directed down and forward require Type 2 protection to prevent heat from passing through to the floor beneath the stove.
