Hearth Pad Frame Repair: Step-by-Step Instructions 

Hearth Pads are often located next to walkways and in our living room, where a lot of life happens. Dents or bent frames can happen over time with repeated bumping and daily wear. This type of cosmetic damage can sometimes lead us to think we’ll need a full frame replacement. Luckily, a bent or dented Hearth Pad typically doesn’t require a full replacement, and a quick repair is a more cost-effective solution. What is the Hearth Pad Frame? 

The first step is making sure you are repairing the right part of your Hearth Pad. The frame is the black powder-coated extruded outer layer of your Traditional Hearth Pad. American Classic Hearth carries three different styles among our subbrands, Hearth Classics and American Panel. Customers can customize their Hearth Pad by choosing from frame styles: original, colonial, and classic edges. Depending on the style chosen, customers can choose between a 1-inch frame and a 1 ¼-inch frame. The two frame sizes offer different specifications and R-value levels.

• Extruded, tubed aluminum for maximum strength
• Corner plugs on the frame to ensure perfectly “square” Hearth Pads every time
• Frames are powder-coated prior to tile/slate installation to prevent overspray issues
• Grout and thinset clean off frames easily

What Materials Do I Need to Repair My Hearth Pad Frame? 

Successful frame repair depends on two things: moving efficiently through time-sensitive steps and allowing adequate time for the frame to fully cure. Skipping steps or rushing the process can lead to improper application or wasted materials. Before beginning your repair, gather all required tools and materials to ensure you can complete each step without interruption. This preparation step will help the repair process go smoothly and improve the overall outcome.

Here is a quick checklist of materials needed: 

• Replacement frame (matching length and profile to the damaged section)
• Corner plugs (45° or 90° depending on your Hearth Pad configuration)
• Drop cloth or cardboard
• Heat gun
• Putty knife
• Hammer
• Matching grout (confirm color before purchasing)
• Grout sponge
• Bucket
• Clamp
• Block

Step-by-Step Frame Repair Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the repair station

Lay your Hearth Pad on a drop cloth or piece of cardboard, tile side down. This is a precautionary step to protect the tile surface and the surrounding area during the repair process. 

Step 2: Soften the construction adhesive

With a heat gun, apply heat slowly and evenly along the damaged section of the frame. Continue until the constructive adhesive softens. You don’t want to melt anything, so try to distribute heat evenly across the damaged surface. 

Step 3: Remove the damaged frame

Place the putty knife blade between the frame and the substrate and tap lightly with the hammer. This technique will help remove the frame from the substrate. The goal is clean separation without cracking the substrate or disturbing adjacent grout lines.

Step 4: Clean, Replace, and Bond

Clear any loose grout or debris from the exposed area. Replace the damaged framing and corner plugs with construction adhesive, and ensure every joint is tight before clamping.. Gaps in the joints won’t close on their own once the adhesive cures.

Step 5: Clamp and Let it Dry

Place a clamping block on both the top and bottom of the frame and let it dry overnight. Make sure to clamp firmly and give it the allotted amount of time to fully cure. 

Step 6: Prep For Grouting

Flip the pad tile-side up. Remove any loose grout or debris from the repair area. The surface needs to be thoroughly cleaned before applying grout.

Step 7: Apply Grout

Mix grout to a smooth, creamy consistency; the texture should be similar to that of peanut butter. Spread the mixture over the repair area and let it sit for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, clean with a damp sponge. Don’t wait longer than 15 minutes before cleaning, as the grout can begin to harden on the tile surface.

Step 8:  Final Wipe-Down

Let it sit for an hour and then wipe down the surface again. Let it dry completely before removing any remaining dust or residue. 

Where Repairs Typically Go Wrong

Three failure points come up consistently in frame repairs:

• Rushing the heat gun can cause insufficient or uneven softening of the damaged section. If the adhesive doesn’t fully soften before removal, it can damage the substrate.
• Not keeping the clamp on long enough can cause shifts and further cosmetic damage. People sometimes remove the clamp when the frame appears set, but while it may appear right it may not of fully bonded to the surface yet. 
• The repair might be structurally correct, but using the wrong grout color can leave an obvious visual imperfection. All three of these issues are avoidable with the proper tools, preparation, and technique. When performing a frame repair, take the time to follow the steps and the recommended curing times. 

When Hearth Pad Frame Repair Isn’t Appropriate

This process is designed for localized frame damage, such as a single bent section or dented corner. It’s not the right approach for pads with structural damage to the substrate, widespread frame warping, or cracked tile in the affected area. If the damage extends beyond the frame itself, consult your Hearth Pad dealer for replacement recommendations.

Q: What type of construction adhesive should I use?

A: Use a standard construction adhesive rated for the substrate material. Your dealer can confirm the right product if you’re unsure. 

Q: Do the corner plugs need to match the original configuration exactly?

A: Yes. The corner angle (45° or 90°) needs to match the original specs. Using the wrong angle can leave gaps at the joints where the adhesive and grout can’t compensate for.

Q: Can this repair be done without a heat gun?

A: Not effectively. The construction adhesive holding the frame to the substrate must be softened before the frame can be removed without damaging the substrate. Attempting to pry the frame without softening the adhesive first risks cracking the tile or breaking the substrate.
